STC embraces responsibility for its actions towards the community and actively seeks channels to impose positive impact on the environment and stakeholders including consumers, employees, investors, communities, and others. We are committed to maintaining a strong relationship with the community in which we operate with high ethical standards through different education programmes and participation in charitable activities. We are also committed to promoting sustainable development by encouraging possible reuse of all sorts of resources and minimizing waste.
We reach out to the community during hard times such as the tainted water scare in 2015, when water tests showed that samples of tap water taken from a number of housing estates contained amounts of lead exceeding WHO standards, we immediately took actions to provide speedy water tests to the public to ease their worries; and during the outbreak of Legionellosis (Legionnaires’ disease) in 2012, we provided free water tests to non-profit organizations.
We promote product safety by reserving part of our annual income for social education and quality improvement. Through programmes such as the Hong Kong Safety Mark, laboratory and school visits, free consumer shopping guides, and product safety carnivals, we are raising awareness of the importance of product safety in the community.
We offer summer internship programme to students from different colleges and universities such as the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the College of International Education (CIE) of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). The programme enables students to examine the routine operations and testing on a variety of products, and to increase their industrial exposure before they enter the job market. It also allows local and overseas students to gain a deeper understanding of the cultures and traditions of China through workshop, training and social activities. In 2015, we launched “STC Scholarship” in recognition of students with outstanding performance.
Summer internships open up rewarding career paths for young people. To establish more formal ties in the educational sector, in 2012 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the OUHK to promote local higher education and explore joint projects. Under the MOU, both parties will collaborate in providing seminars, technical visits and practical training, as well as internship opportunities at STC. Moreover, experienced STC staff will help to teach in OUHK’s Postgraduate Programmes in Testing and Certification.
We are an equal opportunity employer and we treat our staff as our family. Many of our staff members have been with us for 30 years or more, sharing our mission of serving the community. Our employees believe in helping those in need and participate regularly in charitable activities such as the Charity Walks, the Blood Donation Day and take part in the Dress Special Day organised by The Community Chest. In recognition of our culture of caring, we received our first Family Friendly Award Employers Award in 2011 and have been honoured with the Caring Organisation logo since 2007.
